How Martial Arts Has Changed My Life

How Martial Arts Has Changed My Life

Essay Contest Winner: Corey Green

I started martial arts at the age of 7 after I saw the original Karate Kid. I was born and raised in Alaska and for the first 6 years of my life I lived in the middle of the woods where we had to fly in get our food every two weeks to once a month.

At age 7 we moved to a small town called Soldotna (pop.3,000) and attended my first “school”. I got picked on at school and then eventually when I got home my three brothers would give me grief as well. I started off in Tang Soo Do and only stopped after two years because I moved.

I found traditional Karate at age 13 and have been doing Shito-Ryu ever since. I have trained in Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Aikado, Iiado, Kung Fu, Muay Thai, and Tae Kwon Do.

I started martial arts for two reasons: Self Defense and Confidence

In 2006, according to CNN News, I taught the first person in history with autism to qualify and compete for the Karate Nationals in the non handicap division. I have accomplished this feat 5 times with the latest being a girl.

Also, starting in September 2010, I will be working with a local university that has received I.R.B. (institutional review board on testing on human subjects) approval.

I’m writing two books with the first one titled “KarateWise”. The second book is a how to guide in teaching other how to teach students with special needs. The research will go into the second book to prove what I do scientifically works.

I don’t how to answer the question of How martial arts has changed my life because I would be lost without it. Martial arts was what I was born to do and more specifically ,it has been to help those that cannot help themselves. Yes, I do teach students with and without special needs and have 5 time-consecutive National Champions and medalists from ages 5 to 57.

For me, I am helping others, through the martial arts, to help change their lives for the better. Hopefully you all can now see that no matter where you are from, you can achieve great things. All you need is time, consistency, patience, and determination. Lastly, believe in yourself and others will follow!
